ACV Remedies and the Conditions it Treats

Apple Cider Vinegar Remedies

Buying Guide & Tips

Apple Cider Vinegar remedies work only if you use unpasteurized organic ACV. Pasteurization will kill all of the enzymes and good bacteria present in the Apple Cider Vinegar which effectively makes it "dead".

If it's not from an organic source, you could be adding pesticides to your diet which can cause more problems than ACV could help with.

We use Braggs Raw unfiltered ACV. You can get some by clicking on the link to Amazon in the side bar on the right or at your local health food store.

My Own Experience...

For a boost of energy, I drink about 2 tablespoons of ACV mixed with about 4 to 6 ounces of water. It feels cleansing and refreshing to say the least!

I used to use baking soda to get rid of acid reflux or heartburn, but it was only a little effective. Now I use ACV and it works a lot better for me. Within minutes, the heartburn is gone and it stays away - something that didn't happen with baking soda.

Make sure to mix it with something as the acidity of the vinegar can burn your throat a bit going down.

Although this isn't on the remedies list, if you use Henna to color your hair, 2 tablespoons of ACV mixed with the henna makes it stick to gray hair MUCH better! I've done henna with and without, and it really makes a big difference.

Dosage:

There is no real set Dosage for Apple Cider Vinegar. Each of the conditions listed below will have its specific instruction for ACV use.

Conditions This Remedy Treats:

(Clicking on the name of underlined conditions below will take you to the page that discusses the causes and other remedies for that particular condition.)

Acid Reflux/GERD

Mix 1 – 3 teaspoons of ACV in a glass (8 oz) of water 3 times a day before meals or when you are experiencing the symptoms of acid reflux or heartburn. As with any natural remedy, you may need to adjust the amount and frequency of your own doses as needed.

Acne

Mix 1 part ACV to 3 or 4 parts water. With a clean cotton swab, apply the solution to your skin and leave it on for about 10 minutes, then rinse the vinegar off. You can also leave it on overnight and rinse it off in the morning if your acne is more severe. Experiment a little with the strength of the solution if you aren't seeing relief in a couple of days.

Age Spots

Mix 2 parts apple cider vinegar to 1 part onion juice and apply this mixture to your age spots on a daily basis using a cotton swab. In about 2 to 6 weeks, you should start noticing your age spots lightening.

Arthritis

To ease arthritis pain, drink a tonic of ACV and water (2-3 teaspoons in 8 oz. of water. Mix with raw honey for taste.) 3 times a day before meals. You can also make a soothing soak for sore joints by mixing 1.5 cups of very warm water with 1/4 cup of ACV. Relax your hands or feet in this mixture for about 10 minutes 3 times a day. For other joints, use a soft cloth and soak it in the mixture before applying to the affected area.

Asthma

Drink a tonic of 1 – 3 teaspoons of Apple Cider Vinegar, 8 oz. of water and raw honey to taste 3 times a day. You should see a decrease in frequency and/or severity of your attacks. During an attack, mix 1 tablespoon of ACV in an 8 oz glass of water and sip for 30 minutes. Take a 30 minute break and then sip again for another 30 minutes. Some people have also found a compress of ACV on the inside of the wrists helps with asthma attacks.

Bad Breath (Halitosis)

Using Apple Cider Vinegar Remedies for Bad breath is effective and simple. Mix ½ of a tablespoon into a cup of water and gargle for ten seconds at a time until the cup is empty.

Blood Pressure (High)

Mix 1 tablespoon of ACV and 1 tablespoon of raw honey in an 8 oz glass of water. Drink this twice a day to help lower your blood pressure. Both ingredients have a high amount of Potassium, which helps in balancing sodium levels in the blood, thus lowering blood pressure. Dietary changes are recommended in addition to this remedy to assist in keeping blood pressure optimal.

Body Odor

Body odor is caused by bacteria on the skin and ACV has wonderful antibacterial properties.

  • Under Arms: Simply apply undiluted ACV under your arms every morning using a clean cloth or cotton swab.
  • Foot Odor: Mix 1/3 cup of ACV into a pan of water big enough to put your feet in and let them soak for at least 15 minutes once per week.

Bruises

Mix 1 part ACV and 1 part cool or cold water. Soak a soft cloth in the mixture and apply directly to the bruised area for at least 10 to 15 minutes. This reduces inflammation and supplies nutrients through the skin that help your bruise heal quickly.

Burns

Using a soft cloth, apply pure undiluted apple cider vinegar to the burned area (This includes sunburns as well). The nutrients and antibacterial properties of ACV keep the area from getting infected and also make it heal faster.

Cancer Prevention

Besides a lifestyle that excludes junk food, tobacco, alcohol (in excess) and other cancer causing substances, Apple Cider Vinegar Remedies can add nutrients, enzymes, phytochemicals and trace minerals your body needs to fight off the free radicals that cause cancer. Simply mix 1-3 teaspoons of ACV into an 8 oz. glass of water, add raw honey or stevia to taste, and drink this three times a day before meals. If you'd rather, you can also increase to 2 tablespoons of ACV instead and drink it once a day before breakfast.

Cholesterol

ACV contains pectin (a soluble fiber) from the apples it was made from. This type of fiber latches onto fats and cholesterol that you consume and help flush it out of the body.

ACV also contains amino acids that are thought to neutralize the LDL ("bad") type of cholesterol in your blood. Just three teaspoons a day of ACV has been found to reduce total cholesterol in your blood.

Mix a tonic of 1-3 teaspoons of ACV with 8 oz. of water and raw honey or stevia to taste. Drink this 3 times a day before meals.

Colds & Flu

If you already have a cold, mix 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, 2 tablespoons of raw honey and 8 oz of warm water. Drink before bed and before breakfast.

To prevent colds, simply drink a tonic of 1-3 teaspoons of ACV, raw honey or stevia to taste and 8 oz of water 3 times per day. The enzymes and phytonutrients in ACV help boost your immune system.

Constipation

Apple Cider Vinegar remedies all contain pectin (a soluble fiber) from the apples ACV is made from. In addition to that however, are enzymes and nutrients the body needs to function the way it was designed to. ACV is also anti-bacterial, killing off any overabundance of bad bacteria in the gut which can also cause constipation.

People have reported different ways to take ACV for constipation so you may want to experiment.

Start with 1-3 teaspoons in a warm glass (8 oz.) of water and add some raw honey or stevia if you like. Some have used up to 2 tablespoons of ACV twice a day to relieve their constipation.

Make sure to drink plenty of water during the day also, as dehydration can cause constipation as well.

Cramps

For muscle cramps, the Calcium and Magnesium in Apple Cider Vinegar remedies will help keep them from recurring.

Mix 1 teaspoon of ACV and 1 teaspoon of raw honey into 8 oz of warm water. Drink this tonic 3 times a day before meals. This same tonic will also help relieve cramps associated with PMS.

Dandruff

ACV has antifungal properties that will kill the fungus that causes dandruff and itchy scalp.

Apply pure Apple Cider Vinegar to your scalp and work it in well. Let it set for at least 30 minutes. Wash your hair as you normally would.

You can repeat this process as often as needed and you will get the side benefit of very clean and soft hair as well as having your dandruff disappear.

Diabetes

A tonic of ACV and water (4 teaspoons to 8 oz of water) has been found to slow the body's rise in blood glucose levels after eating. Drink this tonic a few minutes before you eat for Type 2 Diabetes and pre-diabetes.

Diaper Rash

Apple Cider Vinegar remedies all have antibacterial and antifungal properties. Mix a wash of 1 part ACV with 1 part water and apply to the rash to kill the fungus and bacteria causing it.

Diarrhea

Drinking a tonic of 1-3 teaspoons of ACV mixed with 8 oz of water 3 times a day will help stop diarrhea. The pectin in the ACV is a soluble fiber that helps create bulk and soak up excess fluid in the colon.

Ear Infection

There are a couple of different apple cider vinegar remedies for ear infections.

One is to mix 1 part ACV to 1 part rubbing alcohol and use an ear syringe (found at your local drug store). Squirt the mixture into the ear while it is facing straight up, let it sit for a minute and then turn the ear toward the floor to drain.

You can also use pure rubbing alcohol, pure ACV or a mixture of the two with 1 part water.

Eczema/Psoriasis

Apple Cider Vinegar Remedies work well for eczema due to ACV's natural anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties.

Simply mix a solution of 1 part ACV and 1 part water and apply to the affected areas. If your eczema is also on your scalp, you can use the same treatment that's used for dandruff: Work pure AVC into the scalp and let sit for at least 30 minutes. Wash your hair as you normally would and repeat as often as needed.

Fatigue

To help fight fatigue, the potassium contained in apple cider vinegar remedies will give you a boost that is healthier than caffeine and more steady as well.

Mix a tonic 3 times a day of 1-3 teaspoons of ACV, 1 teaspoon of raw honey and 8 oz of water. Drink before meals.

Gas & Bloating

Apple cider vinegar remedies that help reduce the gas caused by beans are quite effective because of the live enzymes in ACV.

Soak the beans in ACV and water (1/2 cup ACV in water to cover the beans in a pot) overnight prior to cooking them.

For gas from other foods, this can be caused by not enough stomach acid to digest properly. Mix a tonic of 1-3 teaspoons of ACV and 1 teaspoon of raw honey onto 8 oz. of water and drink 3 times a day just before you eat.

Headache

There are two different Apple Cider Vinegar Remedies that I've seen for headaches:

  • Mix a tonic of 1-3 teaspoons of ACV and 1 teaspoon of raw honey into 8 oz of water and drink this 3 times a day before meals. This seems to help those who suffer from chronic headaches.
  • Inhaling the vapors of ACV during a headache can help relieve it. You can do this by either inhaling the vapors straight from a bottle of pure ACV, or you can boil some water and add a few tablespoons of ACV to the water after taking it off the stove. Inhale the steam for about five minutes.

Heartburn

To ease heartburn symptoms, mix 1-3 teaspoons of Apple Cider Vinegar in 4 to 8 oz of water. This will add acid to your stomach allowing the pH sensitive valve at the end of the esophagus to close so that stomach acid no longer escapes up the esophagus causing heartburn.

For chronic heartburn, please see the apple cider vinegar remedies under Acid Reflux/GERD.

Hemorrhoids

To relieve itching and swelling of hemorrhoids, dab the effected area with pure ACV on a clean cotton swab. Repeat every few hours as needed.

Hiccups

Using apple cider vinegar remedies for hiccups can be very effective. Mix 1 teaspoon of Apple Cider Vinegar into an 8 oz glass of warm water and sip until your hiccups stop.

Hot Flashes & Night Sweats

For relief from hot flashes cause either by menopause or something else, a regular tonic of 1-3 teaspoons of ACV in 8 oz of water 3 times a day has been effective for many people. You may use honey or stevia to taste if it's too sour for you.

Insect Bites

For mosquito bites as well as other minor insect bites, simply apply undiluted ACV to the bite. This will help with swelling and itching.

Insomnia

Warm up raw organic honey by running hot water over the jar to soften it. Don't use a microwave! That would kill everything that is good in the honey. Mix 1 tablespoon of ACV into 1 cup of the raw honey. Take 2 teaspoons of this mixture right before going to bed. Repeat if necessary after about an hour.

Morning Sickness

For nausea caused by pregnancy, (usually called "Morning Sickness" even though most women feel it throughout the day) mix 1 teaspoon of ACV into an 8 oz glass of water and drink it as soon as you wake up in the morning.

Muscle Soreness

For relief from muscle soreness caused by over-exertion, soak a cloth in undiluted apple cider vinegar and apply to the sore area. For all over body soreness, take a warm bath into which you've poured 2 to 3 cups of ACV.

Poison Ivy, Poison Oak & Poison Sumac

To help relieve the severe itching and swelling that can occur from Poison Ivy or Poison Oak, mix a solution of 1 part ACV and 1 part distilled water and place in a spray bottle. Spray the affected areas as necessary. Refrigerate the solution for added relief.

Sore Throat

Mix 1 teaspoon of ACV with 4 oz of warm water and gargle with it three time every hour. Don't swallow this mixture after gargling as the ACV will pick up whatever it is that's causing the sore throat and bind to it.

Ulcers

Apple cider vinegar has antibacterial properties and so can kill the H. Pylori bacteria that cause ulcers. Drink 2 tablespoons mixed in 16 oz of water with 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda 3 times a day. This will take a few weeks, so be patient.

Urinary Tract Infections (UTI)

Apple cider vinegar remedies help balance the pH of the body by reducing the acidic environment where bacteria and yeast thrive and cause UTI.

Mixing 1 to 3 teaspoons of ACV with 8 oz. of cranberry juice will combine ACV's healing properties with another common remedy for clearing up urinary tract infections: Cranberry juice.

Please use only unsweetened organic cranberry juice and add stevia if the taste is not to your liking.

Sweetened fruit juices increase acidity and yeast and bacteria feed on sugar which would nullify any healing effect of this tonic.

Varicose Veins

Apply undiluted apple cider vinegar directly to the varicose veins at night and in the morning. Also drink a tonic of 1-3 teaspoons of ACV in 8 oz. of water three times a day. It will take about a month to see results, so please be patient.

Warts

Apple cider vinegar remedies for warts are just as effective as salicylic acid because ACV's antiviral properties will kill the HPV (human papillomavirus) that causes warts.

Take a small piece of cotton, like that from the tip of a Q-tip, and soak it in undiluted ACV. Apply the soaked cotton directly to the wart and hold it in place with a bandage or water resistant tape and leave on overnight.

Take the bandage off in the morning for a couple of hours (to let it air out) and repeat the process. Replace with a new cotton and bandage every night and morning.

The wart will turn black and fall off by itself in as little as three days or as much as six weeks. You can skip the ACV bandage during the day and only do it at night if that is more convenient. It just takes a little more time that way.

General Properties:

Apple cider vinegar remedies are effective because, if it is unpasteurized, it is full of amino acids, vitamins, minerals, enzymes and many other beneficial microorganisms.

It is antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral as well. Apple cider vinegar (ACV) has an alkalizing effect in the body (even though it is itself, acidic) which is a big part of restoring balance to your body's systems. (Click here for a complete explanation of pH, acid and alkaline in the body.)

Vinegar in general is a fruit or grain (grapes for wine vinegar, malt for malt vinegar, etc.) that gets fermented long enough to pass the alcohol stage and turn into acetic acid, giving it its sour taste. But, it is the substance from which the vinegar is made that gives each kind its unique property and flavor.

For all Apple Cider Vinegar remedies, please use organic, raw (unpasteurized) and unfiltered products. Bragg's is our favorite, but any brand you trust is fine as long as it meets the above criteria.

Possible Side Effects:

Although Apple Cider Vinegar is alkalizing after digestion, it is still acidic before hand. Like anything acidic, such as sodas, orange juice, tobacco, etc., you should always rinse your mouth with water after using apple cider vinegar remedies to prevent damage to your tooth enamel.

Drug Interactions:

Apple Cider Vinegar has been known to cause lowered Potassium levels in the blood if used in large amounts with the following:

  • Digoxin (Digitek®, Lanoxin®)
  • Insulin
  • Diuretics

Simply use in moderation to avoid these possible interactions (apple cider vinegar remedies on this page are considered moderate amounts), or discuss the use of ACV with your Doctor or Pharmacist.

Did You Know…?

  • Hippocrates (the "father of medicine", born around 460 BC and died around 370 BC) is said to have prescribed Apple Cider Vinegar remedies to many of his own patients.
  • You can find Raw Organic Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar in most health food stores. If you don't have a health food store close to you, you can order it online at Amazon.com.
  • The "stuff" floating around in unfiltered ACV is called the "Mother" and is actually made up of acetic acid bacteria and cellulose. It is completely harmless and actually adds to the nutrient content of ACV.
  • Watch out for Apple Cider Vinegar remedies in pill form. Although easier to swallow for some, there have been discrepancies in the past as to whether or not some of these pill supplements actually contained ACV, despite what their labeling claimed. Pills of any kind also go through some form of processing which usually involves heat. This kills all of the nutrients available in the raw, unfiltered liquid form. Adding Raw Honey or Stevia to your ACV tonic makes it much more palatable.
